Most people have heard about Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation and the harmful effects it has on their skin, but what are the specifics? There are two kinds of UV rays that can reach past the atmosphere: UVB and UVA. UVB rays, much like they act upon the surface of the ocean, really only reach the top layers of your skin and give you those dreaded sunburns. UVA rays penetrate far deeper into your skin and can not only cause irreversible damage, but can often times lead to forms of skin cancer.
You can check your UV index each and every day to know your risk of exposure before you leave the house. The US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a UV index forecast to help you prevent overexposure to the sun's radiation.
