When you apply lotion, you just pour some in your hand, spread it on the skin and rub really fast until it disappears, right?
Wrong. It turns out that when you rub briskly, you push the lotion right past the surface of the skin and into the deeper layers. That leaves the top layer - the epidermis - unprotected, allowing the sun's damaging UV rays to not only burn and damage the skin, but to penetrate into the dermis, where your tattoo ink is. That means your sunblock really isn't blocking much of anything at all, leaving your tattoos vulnerable to premature fading.
The best way to apply lotion - whether it's sunblock, sunscreen or moisturizer - is to smooth on a layer with a few sweeping motions. Don't rub it in yet. Instead, let it sit on the skin for about 60 seconds. Then, if any lotion remains, gently massage it in.
Now the surface of your skin has a defensive barrier...and your tattoo has protection from the fading glare of the sun and the drying effects of harsh weather.
